Baptisms

Baptisms (often referred to as Christenings) are the special service where we welcome someone into the church family. At this service you will promise to bring your child up as a Christian and to bring them to church regularly.  If this is something you are uncomfortable with you we can offer an alternative service, called a Thanksgiving, which enables you to give thanks to God for the birth of your child without making commitments you currently feel unable to make.

Both adults and children can be baptised. Adults will make their own promises to God; parents of children who are not old enough to make those promises for themselves make the promises on their child’s behalf.

Baptism is an important event, and it takes time to prepare, so after you have attended St James’ or an Edge Community event on a Sunday, one of the staff team will meet with you to explain the service and why baptism is so important.
